{"id":8723,"date":"2016-07-19T15:36:08","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T15:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/readtogrow.org\/?p=8723"},"modified":"2016-08-23T21:47:16","modified_gmt":"2016-08-23T21:47:16","slug":"reading-difficulty-in-young-children-linked-to-later-trouble-with-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/readtogrow.bulldogstudios.com\/es\/reading-difficulty-in-young-children-linked-to-later-trouble-with-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading Difficulty in Young Children Linked to Later Trouble with Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"http:\/\/youthtoday.org\/author\/stellsimonton\/\"><strong>Stell Simonton<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 excerpted from Youth Today | July 18, 2016<\/p>\n<p>Every young life starts out with promise, and the adults who love a child yearn for that child to have a bright future.<\/p>\n<p>But what if a simple barrier at an early age sets a child up for failure?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8724 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/readtogrow.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reading-difficulty-graphic-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"Reading difficulty graphic\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readtogrow.bulldogstudios.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reading-difficulty-graphic-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/readtogrow.bulldogstudios.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reading-difficulty-graphic.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Difficulty in reading is such a barrier between a grade-level reading problem and, later on, incarceration in the juvenile justice system,\u201d said Ralph Smith, managing director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/gradelevelreading.net\/\">Campaign for Grade-Level Reading<\/a>, a national collaboration of foundations, nonprofits, business leaders, and communities focusing on school success for children in low-income families.<\/p>\n<p>Reading is so foundational, the Campaign has a nationwide effort to bring all kids to reading proficiency by the end of third grade.<\/p>\n<p>Cities like Orlando, Fla., have made literacy a cornerstone of their after-school and summer programs for kids. And a statewide campaign in Arkansas brings together school districts, teachers and volunteers to provide tutoring, mentoring and innovative summer literacy activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a very strong association between behavior problems and academic achievement,\u201d said Deborah Stipek, former dean of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University.<\/p>\n<p>Stick and Sara Miles collaborated on research published in 2006 that followed children from first through fifth grade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that in first grade, achievement in literacy and reading predicted later aggression,\u201d said Miles, who is now research director for the nonprofit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.challengesuccess.org\/\">Challenge Success<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur theory was that kids who are struggling as readers \u2026\u201d develop frustration and a negative relation to school. \u201cIt sort of snowballs,\u201d Miles said.<\/p>\n<p>They get more off-track as they get older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can lead to low self-esteem and an antagonistic relation with school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Chuang Wang, professor of educational research at the University of North Carolina, also has researched the link between reading and behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that students who have behavior problems also have problems in reading,\u201d he said of a study involving second graders published in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you improve reading, then you might have less problem with delinquency,\u201d Wang said. \u201cThey are highly connected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He cautioned that poor reading does not cause delinquency, however.
