Really. I just couldn\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>For years, Read to Grow has given Geraldine the baby books and colorful picture books that she uses as essential tools in building the language skills of children under her care. <\/strong>The 71-year-old teaches and cares for three young children as a licensed Early Head Start provider at her home on Beacon Street in Hamden. All the children are under 3 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Geraldine is one of more than 140 childcare providers across Connecticut to whom Read to Grow delivers supplies of children\u2019s books. We also offer workshops on how to encourage the language understanding and communication of infants and toddlers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read to Grow has given more than 1.8 million books to over 1.2 million people in Connecticut since the year 2000<\/strong>. We operate statewide with three programs: <em>Books for Babies, Books for Kids,<\/em> and the new <em>Early Steps to School Success-New Haven<\/em>. Along with free books, we offer workshops and other early childhood literacy information to families, particularly those living at-risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annually our programs provide more than 180,000 children\u2019s books and services: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em> <strong>at 8 community health centers<\/strong>, <\/em><em>for pregnant women to build home libraries before their babies are born and to understand they will be their babies\u2019 first teachers.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em> at 14 hospitals,<\/em><\/strong> <em>where families of all newborns receive our literacy packets and talk with volunteers about early brain development and the fun and importance of encouraging babies\u2019 language skills.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em> at 33 Book Places set up at other nonprofits,<\/em><\/strong> <em>for their clients and residents in their communities to select books to keep.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> <strong>through 13 Partnerships<\/strong>,<\/em><em> which include collaborations with Connecticut Food Bank, Nurturing Families Network and The Diaper Bank. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> <strong>in direct response to requests<\/strong> <\/em><em>from families, teachers, doctors, childcare providers, and community groups and services. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em> through a new partnership with Save the Children in New Haven called Early Steps to School Success,<\/em><\/strong><em> which promotes literacy and kindergarten readiness for children newborn to age 5.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10044\" src=\"https:\/\/readtogrow.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/wa2-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readtogrow.bulldogstudios.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wa2-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/readtogrow.bulldogstudios.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wa2-768x610.jpg 768w, https:\/\/readtogrow.bulldogstudios.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wa2.jpg 822w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>This holiday season, please consider a gift to support our work. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You can donate in honor or memory of someone special.
